Drives rarely fail without warning. They fail with a window — days or weeks where the signs are still hints and the data is still readable. Acting inside that window costs you an afternoon. Missing it costs considerably more, and sometimes it costs everything on the disk.
Maybe yours has started clicking. Maybe files have begun disappearing, or the whole machine freezes mid-sentence and comes back thirty seconds later. Whatever brought you here, one rule outranks everything else on this page, so it goes first.
The golden rule: back up now, diagnose later
Every hour a failing drive spends powered on is an hour for it to get worse. Before you run a single test, copy off the files that cannot be recreated — photos, tax records, the business accounts. Not a clone, not a disk image: just the irreplaceable things, dragged onto another drive or into a cloud service, most important first.
The order matters because failing drives do not degrade politely. If the drive dies halfway through the copy, you want it to have died after the photos made it across, not during a folder of old installers. The sounds a dying drive makes
A traditional spinning drive is a mechanical device, and mechanical failure is usually audible before it is fatal.
- Clicking or ticking. The classic. The read head keeps missing its position and snapping back to try again. This is serious — turn the machine off. Every extra minute of running risks the head damaging the surface that holds your files.
- Grinding or scraping. Worse than clicking: something may already be in contact with the platter surface. Power down now, not after one more copy attempt.
- Beeping or a strained whine. Usually the motor trying and failing to spin platters that are stuck. The drive is spending its last strength; don't make it keep trying.
None of these sounds gets better on its own. A drive that clicked for a day and went quiet has not healed — it has simply not failed yet.
The signs you can see
- Files that vanish or will not open, or folders that show empty and then, after a restart, do not.
- Copying that crawls, especially when it stalls hard on one particular file and then resumes. That stall is the drive re-reading a damaged spot over and over.
- Freezes where the whole machine stops for thirty seconds and comes back as if nothing happened.
- Crashes that get more frequent with no other explanation.
- A drive that sometimes does not appear at boot, then does after a restart. That is not intermittent luck; that is a drive going.

Ask the drive itself: checking SMART
Every modern drive keeps a health log about itself, called SMART, and reading it costs nothing.
- On Windows, download CrystalDiskInfo — free and the standard tool for this job. It gives each drive a one-word verdict: Good, Caution or Bad. Caution usually means the drive has found failing spots and moved data away from them (reallocated sectors), or has spots it cannot decide about (pending sectors). A drive that has started reallocating tends to keep going.
- On a Mac, open Disk Utility, click the drive itself — the top-level entry, not the volume underneath it — and read the S.M.A.R.T. status line: Verified or Failing.
Treat SMART as a useful pessimist but an unreliable optimist. A Failing verdict means exactly that. A Good verdict does not overrule your ears, because SMART watches error counts and electronics, not the sound of the heads — drives die with a clean report every day. SSDs fail differently
Solid-state drives have no moving parts, so the entire audible chapter above does not apply — which is exactly the problem. The warning you would have heard never comes. SSDs tend to go from working to unreadable abruptly, and their one common courtesy is turning read-only first: you can open everything, but nothing saves and nothing deletes. If an SSD suddenly refuses to save anything, copy your data off immediately. That is frequently the only warning you get. SMART works for SSDs too — CrystalDiskInfo shows how much of the drive's rated write life has been used — but a failed controller ignores the statistics and takes the whole drive with it in a moment.
What continued use does to your recovery odds
The read heads in a spinning drive fly a few nanometres above the platter surface. When a head is damaged, every power-on is another chance for it to touch down and scrape away the magnetic layer — and data on a scraped area is gone for everyone, at any price. The drives recovery labs save most often are the ones powered off at the first click. The ones they lose are the ones restarted a dozen times to check whether it is still doing it.
There is a quieter version of the same mistake: running recovery software on a drive that is failing but still readable. A deep scan is hours of sustained load, and it can finish the drive off before it finishes the scan. Copy your files plainly first and leave deep scanning to a professional. The same logic applies when files have merely been deleted rather than the drive failing — deleted or lost files is its own emergency with its own rules.
What to do, in order
- Copy the irreplaceable files first, most important at the front of the queue, to another drive or a cloud service.
- Do not run repair tools yet. chkdsk and similar utilities write to the drive, and writing to a failing drive can finish what it started. Copy first, repair later — if at all.
- Check SMART with CrystalDiskInfo or Disk Utility so you know what you are dealing with.
- Stop using the drive once your files are safe. A drive that has started to fail cannot be talked back into service. Replace it, and wipe or destroy the old one.
- If it is already clicking, grinding or vanishing at boot, skip everything except step one — and if even copying fails, power it off and get help. Repeated power-ons make professional recovery harder and more expensive.
Being honest about recovery
If the drive is dead and the data matters, professional recovery is real: cleanroom work, donor parts, imaging equipment that can read drives no computer will.
