A hot laptop is not just unpleasant. Sustained heat shortens the life of the battery and everything soldered near it, and modern machines quietly slow themselves down to cope — so an overheating laptop and a slow laptop are frequently the same machine.
The causes are few, and they announce themselves if you listen. A fan that roars from the moment you open the lid is saying something different from one that only spins up during video calls, and both are different again from a machine that clicks. Work through this in order and yours will usually turn up in the first two checks.
First, is it the machine or one program?
Before reaching for a screwdriver, check what is actually running. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows to open Task Manager, or open Activity Monitor on a Mac, and sort by CPU.
- One process sitting at 90–100% — that is your answer. It is often a stalled update, an antivirus scan that never finishes, or a sync client chewing through a backlog. End it or let it finish, and the fan should stand down within a minute or two.
- Everything looks modest but the fan still roars — that points at airflow, which on a laptop more than a year old usually means dust.
Browsers deserve their own mention. Every open tab is a small program, and one badly behaved page — an autoplaying video, a heavy ad, a tracking script gone feral — can pin a processor core all by itself. Close the tabs you are not using and watch the CPU column. If the fan goes quiet, you have your culprit, and it will be back the next time you have forty tabs open. Dust, and why laptops choke on it
Dust is the most common cause of chronic overheating. A laptop pulls cool air through small intake vents, usually on the underside, and pushes hot air out through a heatsink at the side or back. After a year or two of desks, sofas and carpet, the intakes and the heatsink's fine fins clog with felt-like lint. The fan then runs flat out while moving very little air.
Compressed air at the vents helps a little. It also tends to push dust deeper in, and blasting the fan can spin it fast enough to damage the bearing — hold the blades still through the grille if you try it. A proper clean means opening the machine, and on many modern laptops that is more delicate than it looks: ribbon cables and glued-in batteries do not forgive enthusiasm.
For a technician who does it every week, the same clean is a twenty-minute bench job — open the back, clear the heatsink properly, check the fan spins freely, close it up. If your laptop is thin, expensive or still under warranty, paying for those twenty minutes is the sensible version of this fix. Where and how you use it matters
- Hard, flat surfaces only. Beds, cushions and laps seal the underside intakes completely — the machine is trying to breathe through a duvet. This is the most common cause of sudden overheating and the easiest fix on this page.
- Mind the season. Cooling starts from the air in the room, so a machine that coped in January can struggle in July. Direct sun, a parked car or a desk above a radiator raises the baseline before the laptop has done any work at all.
- Heavy work is supposed to be loud. A laptop running a game or rendering video is doing what it was built to do, and a loud fan under that load is normal. Loud under sustained load is fine; loud at idle is the symptom worth chasing.
- Trim what launches at startup. Every background program that starts itself at boot is heat you pay for all day, whether you use it or not.
Why a cooling pad is a bandage
Cooling pads do work, a little. Raising the laptop improves airflow to the intakes, and the pad's fans feed it cooler air. But a pad treats the symptom. A machine with clogged vents and dried-out thermal paste is still clogged, still dry and still throttling — just slightly less so. Buy one to help a healthy machine through a hot summer of heavy work if you like. Do not buy one instead of a cleaning.
When it is not dust
If the vents are clean and it still runs hot, the thermal paste between the processor and its heatsink has probably dried out. Paste is a consumable: after three or four years it goes from something like toothpaste to something like chalk, and heat stops crossing into the heatsink no matter how hard the fan works. Replacing it is routine work for a technician — it goes in the same visit as a cleaning — and on an older machine the difference is often dramatic.
A fan that grinds, buzzes or rattles is failing mechanically. Bearings do not heal. Replace it before it stops entirely, because once it does, the machine will crawl or cut out to protect itself every time you ask it to work.
Shutting down on its own under load means it is already hitting emergency temperatures. The machine is protecting itself, but heat that trips the cutoff is heat that is aging everything inside — the battery especially. If yours has also started draining fast or refusing to charge, heat may be part of that story. Stop using it for heavy work until it has been looked at.
Fan noise or clicking? Different emergencies
Everything above assumes the noise is the fan — a whoosh or a whir that rises and falls with load. A click, tick or scrape, especially a rhythmic one, is not the fan. In an older laptop with a mechanical hard drive, clicking is the classic sound of the drive dying, and that is a different and more urgent problem: a loud fan threatens the laptop, a clicking drive threatens everything on it. Stop, back up whatever you cannot afford to lose, and read the warning signs of a failing hard drive before you do anything else. Machines with solid-state drives — most laptops from the last several years — contain nothing that clicks except a fan blade catching a loose cable, which a technician can fix in minutes.
