Wi-Fi that dies at random is maddening because it fixes itself before you can diagnose it. The connection drops, you get up to glare at the router, and by the time you're there it works again.

The culprit is almost always on a short list — the device, the router, its placement, or the line coming into the building. Work through the list in order and you'll corner it.

Start with the split: one device, or everything

When the Wi-Fi drops, check your phone and your laptop before touching anything — this one observation cuts the problem in half. If one device drops while everything else stays up, the fault lives in that device; skip ahead to the laptop section. If everything drops together, it's the router or the line.

Note when it happens, too. Drops at the same time every evening point one way; drops whenever someone runs the microwave point another. The pattern is diagnostic gold.

The 30-second reboot, and what it tells you

Unplug the router — and the modem, if it's a separate box — for 30 seconds. Plug the modem in first, wait for its lights to settle, then the router. This clears its working memory and forces a fresh connection to the provider.

The result is informative either way. If the drops stop for good, it was a one-off. If they stop for a few days and then creep back, the router is failing or overheating — check it isn't buried in a cabinet on top of a cable box, quietly cooking itself. A router that needs a weekly reboot is telling you something.

Dead zones are not dropouts

If the connection only dies in certain rooms, that's coverage, not a fault. Wi-Fi is radio, and radio obeys physics: 2.4 GHz travels farther and pushes through walls better, while 5 GHz is faster but gives up sooner. Water and metal are the enemies — a fridge, a fish tank, a wall full of pipes, foil-backed insulation.

The fix is placement before hardware: router near the middle of the space, up high, out in the open. If the building simply outreaches one router, a mesh system fills the gaps. A faster internet plan changes nothing here — the radio doesn't know what you pay for.

Interference and crowded channels

In apartments and dense neighborhoods, dozens of routers shout over each other on a handful of channels, and 2.4 GHz is shared with baby monitors, Bluetooth and cordless phones. A microwave oven is, from Wi-Fi's point of view, a jammer with a popcorn button.

Modern routers pick their channel automatically. Older ones pick once and stay loyal to a channel that has long since filled up. Drops that cluster in the evening, when the whole street is home and streaming, are the classic sign. Band steering and mesh handoffs

Some drops are the network trying to be helpful. A dual-band router broadcasting one network name nudges devices between 2.4 and 5 GHz as conditions change — band steering — and some devices handle the shove badly, going dark for a few seconds mid-switch. Mesh systems have their own version: walking through the house hands your device from node to node, and one that clings to a distant node will stall, drop and rejoin.

If the drops track your movement through the building, this is your suspect. Update the router or mesh firmware first — handoff logic genuinely improves between versions. If one stubborn device keeps stumbling, give the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands separate names and pin it to whichever it prefers.

The laptop that drops when nothing else does

If the first test pointed at a single Windows laptop, two culprits cover most cases: a power-saving setting and a stale driver.

  1. Stop Windows switching the adapter off. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, double-click your Wi-Fi adapter, open the Power Management tab and untick "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Windows cuts the radio to stretch the battery and doesn't always wake it cleanly.
  2. Update the Wi-Fi driver. Get it from the laptop maker's support page for your exact model, not just Windows Update — the maker's build is tuned for the hardware.
  3. Forget and rejoin the network. This discards a stale saved profile and renegotiates from scratch.

DHCP lease weirdness

Your router hands every device a temporary address — a DHCP lease — and renews it on a timer. Usually that's invisible. Occasionally it isn't: a device stumbles at renewal and shows "connected, no internet," or two devices claim the same address and knock each other offline in turns. The giveaway is drops at suspiciously regular intervals, or one pair of devices that only ever fail together.

The reboot in step two resets the router's address table and cures most of it. If someone once gave a printer or camera a manually set address, make sure it sits outside the range the router hands out — a static address inside the pool is a collision waiting for a busy evening.

When the router is simply old

Consumer routers run hot, around the clock, for years, and they age like anything else that does. Meanwhile the load has grown: the household that owned five wireless devices when the router was bought now runs phones, TVs, doorbells, smart plugs and a printer — twenty-plus clients on hardware built for a quieter era.

The signs of a router at the end: it needs rebooting weekly, it drops exactly when the house is busiest, and it hasn't seen a firmware update in years. Replacement is the honest fix — no setting makes old silicon young — and it's better done on your schedule than the router's.

The wired test: when it isn't Wi-Fi at all

Before you buy anything, run the one test that separates Wi-Fi from everything behind it. Plug a laptop directly into the router with an Ethernet cable and work that way for a while. If the connection still drops while wired, it is not Wi-Fi at all — it is the modem, the line, or the provider, and you have just saved yourself from buying a router that would not have helped.

The modem's lights tell you more. Solid power and downstream/upstream (or "online") lights mean it's locked onto the provider's signal; lights that blink or cycle at the moment of a drop mean it's losing sync — usually noisy or corroded cabling outside, or a failing modem. Note the dates and times and call the provider with them: "my modem loses sync most evenings around eight" gets a line technician dispatched far faster than "my Wi-Fi keeps dropping."
